Oh, Canada ?

OH, CANADA…. If you have ever watched an ice hockey game the tune should be ringing in your head. Hockey is the one American professional sport which I believe still plays both the American and Canadian national anthems at every game.  When the National Hockey League began decades ago there were only six teams. Two were from Canada.  All were populated with mostly Canadian players. Canada is where the sport originated and one of two countries where it is the national sport.

It is a rough and tumble blue collar sport for outdoorsy types who are more inclined to partake of beer than cocktails or drugs.  Hockey and the fictional McKenzie brothers from “the Great White North” are part of the iconic image of easy going not-fancy Canadian life. Maple syrup and Mounties. Curling, another very esoteric Canadian sport, will never draw the Kentucky Derby crowd.

So let’s hear it for Canada:

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all of us command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!

From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

For many of us Canada seemed to be a kinder, funnier, goofy cousin of America.

In the 1980’s I took a brief trip to Toronto. It was beautiful, impeccably clean, had subways that were safe at all hours, and wonderful restaurants and bars.  Sadly I have heard that it now has all the elements of 21st American cities with regard to crime, drugs, and homelessness. The latter must be vastly more tragic in the icy north country than in Venice Beach CA.

But even sadder is the change in tone. I won’t say that it is anything not happening in America. I suppose I just thought they might remain a bit less trendy and well, saner.

We begin with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. When asked in 2013 which nation he admired the most, he replied “Communist China.  “There is a level of admiration I actually have for China because their basic dictatorship is allowing them to actually turn their economy around on a dime “ [1].

Wow!

Not quite: “The True North strong and free!”

Yes dictatorship is much less work than freedom,

which is why you have to “stand on guard for thee”.

Canada itself seems to have taken a somber tone.  In a previous post ,“Death by Natural Causes” [2], I detailed Canada’s extremely enthusiastic embrace of medically assisted suicide. It has expanded to the point of encouraging those with non-fatal conditions or mental illness, as well as adolescents, veterans with expensive conditions, and homeless people, to consider the cheaper solution. Just end it all. They actually had an ad campaign. It all seems a form of nihilism.

Certainly not: “With glowing hearts we see thee rise

During a strike by truckers who objected to mandatory experimental injections for a group of people who are almost always alone in their trucks, the leader who so admires the Chinese dictatorship did what Chairman Xi Jinping would do. He assumed powers more appropriate to wartime for a group of guys out with their trucks, their kids playing hockey, and their supporters grilling up food. The noise was probably a bit much. But a lighter hearted group of protesters could never be found. Hardly terrorists. Yet Mr. Trudeau threatened their ability to work and sent police on horseback into the crowds. Was he channeling Tiananmen square?

Then he took the most extreme of actions. Something the west generally reserves for people like Vladimir Putin. He froze their bank accounts.  It isn’t the 18th century. People generally cannot function without bank accounts. He took their assets. It was a modern day siege. Wait until they have no resources, no food, can’t pay the mortgage.

It was effective but hardly: “God keep our land glorious and free!.

Now, in a rush to join the fashion-of-the-day dystopia, Canada is putting men, the biological kind, in women’s shelters, where women go to seek escape from abusive men. A woman in a shelter in Windsor Canada was sexually assaulted by a man who declared female as a chosen identity.  Another man, a  convicted sex offender, raped a woman at a shelter in Ontario.  One may as well let a coyote identify as a chicken to gain access to the henhouse.  In British Columbia a woman, who was trying to escape domestic violence at the hands of a man, found herself kicked out of the shelter for alleged “transphobia” because she didn’t want men to be in a shelter designed to protect women from men [3].

This is definitely a far cry from:

We stand on guard for thee”

Oh Canada? Oh Canada, indeed.
